Mazda has unveiled details and photos of its new CX-5, just before its official September debut in the Frankfurt Auto Show. The compact crossover is the first to fully feature Mazda’s new green SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, with the“KODO – Soul of Motion” design theme. This breakthrough technology was introduced on the Mazda Shinari concept car last year.

The third in the CX series, the CX-5 is smaller than both the CX-7 and CX-9. The innovative design includes a distinctively bold front view and a more dynamic look overall. The SKYACTIV Technology is reflected in a new body and chassis, gasoline and diesel engines, and manual and automatic transmissions. Though lighter, the body is also sturdier, due to the use of high-strength steel.

The CX-5 will be available in Europe with a direct-injection 2.0 liter gasoline engine and a 2.2 liter turbo diesel engine, though it’s expected that the U.S. will see only the gasoline version. Mazda says each engine will offer improved fuel efficiency. More U.S. details are sure to be forthcoming in the L.A. Auto Show in November.
